The waist cincher, which is often termed the ‘Waspie’ is a belt type garment which is worn around the waist to decrease, or give the illusion of decreasing, the size of the waist.

 

Modern waist cinchers or waspies since the 1980s are often styled as wide, laced belts with elastic fabric and soft plastic stiffeners.

During the 1950s, following Christian Dior’s ‘New Look’,  the terms waist cincher, waspie and guêpière were variations or synonyms of girdle and corselette.  The ribbon corset is a term for a corset made from ribbon rather than fabric.

Dior’s New Look gave the waist cincher enormous popularity in the late 1940s. Dior wrote: “I designed clothes for flower-like women, with rounded shoulders, full feminine busts, and hand-span waists above enoumous spreading skirts”.  The slim waists favoured by Dior were achieved by foundations garments such as the supremely popular waist cincher. This waist cincher was popularly called the ‘waspie’ or ‘guepiere’ and was ‘the’ undergarment of the New Look. These waspies were boned and were much shorter than the former Victorian corsets. The fashion press of the time said of waspies that they were ‘super-light weight’ and had ‘feather boning’ and were normally worn tightly cinched at the waist and usually over a girdle.

Waspies are a very popular introduction to the world of corsetry for many people and tend to be less restrictive and more flexible in their uses than full corsets. One of the most popular brands is the superbly crafted Eternal Spirits corset brand.

What Katie Did was begun in 1999 as the inspiration of a talented lingerie designer, the beauitful  Katie Halford. Katie couldn’t find seamed corset stockings at reasonable prices in London which inspired her to commence on the road to designer stockings, designer lingerie and on to the luxury designer corset brand we know today, What Katie Did!                               

An inspirational brand What Katie Did found success from the start and in May 2005 Katie received a telephone call from TopShop which eventually lead to the placing of an order.

Corsets, as you may imagine, have always been a big passion of Katies’ and she commenced her career at Skin Two Retail in 1995. At that period fetish shops were the only source of proper steel boned corsets and for that matter nylon fully fashioned stockings. What Katie Did silk corsets were officially launched in the January of 2006 which was also the point at which What Katie Did commenced its business relationship with the retro pin up photographer Tony Nylons (how appropriately named) who has been responsible for all of the brands photography, except the Bernie Dexter pictures,  ever since. What a partnership it has been ‘Inspirational Corset designer meets Talented Photographic artist’….a match made in corset heaven.

What Katie Did produce two collections each year which have a worldwide cult following. Their designs are not just retro influenced but are actually made using vintage patterns which are carefully adapted for today’s woman. The What Katie Did corset brand tries to adhere, where possible, to the fabrics and manufacturing processes that were available at that time.

What Katie Did  have a wide range of bullet bras, waist cinchers,  girdles and 6 strap suspender belts. Their corsets are all steel boned and designed to take up to 4″ from the waist. What Katie did, though probably best known for their sexy corsets, also design a wide range of genuine fully fashioned stockings, seamed nylons and fishnets and retro lingerie.
